The film begins in Imperial Russia 1874. It starts at house of Prince Stepan "Stiva" Oblonsky in Moscow. His wife, Princess Daria "Dolly", catches Stiva and the governess of their five children having sex in a closet, having found the governess' note to her husband. Dolly tearfully banishes Stiva out of the home, forbidding him to ever see her or their children again.
